Kirby (Japanese: カービィ, Hepburn: Kābī , Japanese pronunciation: [kaːbiː]) is the titular protagonist of the Kirby series of video games owned by Nintendo and one of Nintendo'south most popular and familiar major mascots, Kirby's round advent and ability to copy his foes' powers has made him a well-known figure in video games, consistently ranked as one of the nigh iconic video game characters of best. He first appeared in 1992 in Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy. Originally a placeholder, created by Masahiro Sakurai, at the age of 19, for the game'due south early development, he has since then starred in over 20 games, ranging from action platformers to puzzle, racing, and fifty-fifty pinball, and has been featured equally a playable fighter in all Super Smash Bros. games. He has too starred in his own anime and manga series. Since 1999, he has been voiced by Makiko Ohmoto.
Kirby is well known for his ability to inhale objects and creatures to gain their powers, equally well as his ability to float by expanding his body. He uses these abilities to rescue various lands, including his homeworld of Planet Popstar, from evil forces and antagonists, such as Nighttime Matter or Nightmare. On these adventures, he often crosses paths with his rivals, Male monarch Dedede and Meta Knight, though Meta Knight can exist seen as a hero, depending on the game. Kirby has been described as one of the most legendary video game characters of all fourth dimension by PC World.[8] In virtually all his appearances, Kirby is depicted as cheerful, innocent and nutrient-loving; withal, he becomes fearless, bold and clever in the confront of danger.
Concept and creation [edit]
Kirby was created by Masahiro Sakurai every bit the player character of the 1992 game Kirby'due south Dream Country. The character'south design was intended to serve as placeholder graphics for the game's original protagonist in early on evolution and thus was given a simplistic brawl-like appearance. Sakurai switched to the placeholder design for the final character pattern when he believed that it served the grapheme better.[9] The graphic symbol was known as Popopo ( ポポポ ) during development until the name "Kirby" was called from a draft list of potential names. Shigeru Miyamoto stated that "Kirby" was chosen in accolade of American lawyer John Kirby, who defended Nintendo in the Universal City Studios, Inc. 5. Nintendo Co., Ltd. case in 1984 and that the guttural-sounding name contrasted amusingly with the character's cute appearance.[10] [11] Kirby appears white in Kirby'south Dream Land due to the grayscale palette of the Game Boy system. Sakurai intended the grapheme to be pinkish, though Miyamoto had originally thought the character to exist xanthous. Kirby does announced white in the game's N American promotional materials and artwork to reflect the graphic symbol's in-game advent.[nine]
In North America, Kirby consistently appears in artwork with a more than striking, bolder expression than in Japan, where his expression is more than relaxed. Nintendo has said that the more than battle-ready appearance appeals to a wider audience in North America.[12]
Characteristics [edit]
Kirby can gain the properties of enemies or objects he eats. For example; by inhaling a sword wielding foe, Kirby becomes a skilled swordsman.
Physical appearance [edit]
Kirby has a pinkish, spherical, torso with minor stubby arms and big red shoes. His optics are a distinctive oval shape and are white (heart polish) at the top, black in the center and nighttime bluish on the bottom (all black in early on games) with rosy cheek-blushes nearly his eyes. His body is soft and flexible, allowing him to stretch or flatten and adopt different shapes, open his oral cavity very wide to inhale foes, or inflate himself with air and fly. He is xx cm (virtually eight in) tall,[4] [thirteen] [14] In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby's Return to Dream Country and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, different colored Kirbys announced as other players in multi-player games. In the case of the latter, they are the event of Kirby being divided into 4 by Dark Meta Knight.[fifteen]
Personality [edit]
Kirby hails from the distant Planet Popstar, where he lives in a dome-shaped firm in the land of Dream Land.[13] He has a positive attitude, and often helps to salvage Dream State through the utilize of his unique powers. His age is never direct stated,[four] [16] although he is referred to as a "picayune boy" in the English transmission for Kirby'southward Dream Country, described as a infant in the anime, and was referred to as being a "jolly boyfriend" in Kirby Super Star.
Kirby is cheerful and innocent. He is often depicted with a voracious appetite. His other hobbies include singing, although he is tone-deafened.[iv] [xiii]
Abilities [edit]
Kirby's main ability is inhaling enemies and objects and spitting them out with incredible force. Both his mouth and torso expand to allow him to inhale things much larger than himself. However, there is a limit to what he can inhale; excessively large or heavy foes like bosses tin can resist Kirby'south inhale. Confronting these opponents Kirby must find smaller characters to employ every bit ammo or intercept his opponent'due south attacks and send them back at them.
Kirby Super Star greatly expanded on the concept of Copy Abilities from Kirby's Hazard. Originally Kirby just obtained one move from a Copy Ability which replaced his Inhale simply Kirby Super Star introduced multiple fighting techniques for each ability with their own controls. Additionally while Kirby's Adventure didn't have Kirby'south appearance drastically change when he had a Re-create Power, aside from his colour changing to orange or snowfall white, or wielding a weapon for abilities like Sword or Hammer. Kirby Super Star gave each Re-create Ability its own costume, such as a fiery crown for Fire Kirby or a floppy green cap that resembles Link'due south for Sword Kirby.
In Kirby Super Star, Kirby could cede his electric current Copy Ability to create a 'Helper', an allied version of the enemy Kirby typically gets that ability from.[17] The new Helper could be controlled by the game or a second role player. This feature has non yet been included in later on Kirby games, although it was included in Kirby Super Star's remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra and was intended to return in the cancelled GameCube Kirby game which would take had Kirby able to make up to iv helpers at once. In the game Kirby Star Allies, the game's main mechanic is similar to this, simply with now upwardly to 3 helpers without sacrificing his electric current copy ability.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Kirby's Final Smash is his Cook power from Kirby Super Star, which cook opponents, items and more than.[eighteen] In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Boom Bros. Ultimate, Kirby'south Terminal Boom is an Ultra Sword attack.[18]
Species [edit]
Although never explored in groovy detail in the serial, Kirby is not the only member of his kind. Like looking characters are seen in the catastrophe of Kirby's Dream State, and its remake Leap Breeze in Kirby Super Star. Meta Knight and Galacta Knight, both of whom conduct a close resemblance to Kirby without their masks, are frequently hinted to exist of the same species as Kirby.[xix] In full general, members of the species all look like, only sometimes take dissimilar colored skin, eyes, and feet.
No official term exists for them other than Kirby'south species. They are commonly referred to as 'Kirbys' and is the name of both the species and character. As a name, however, 'Kirby' refers to only i character. In the English manual of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, the term 'Kirbys' is used at points, to illustrate the characteristic of having four differently colored versions of Kirby active in the game simultaneously, although in this state of affairs the four "Kirbys" are four pieces of Kirby rather than four individual Kirby-like beings. Another common term is 'Dream Landers', a term used in the instruction manual for Kirby'due south Adventure.[20] This term, yet, also refers to anyone who lives in Dream Land, including characters like King Dedede. The biography of Kirby in Super Smash Bros. Brawl says Kirby is a denizen of Dream Land.[21] Sometimes the term 'puff' or 'puffball' is used in official materials to refer to Kirby'south round shape,[22] though this does not necessarily betoken the name of his species.
In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby's Return to Dream Country and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, different colored Kirbys announced as other players in multi-player games. In the case of the latter, they are the result of Kirby existence divided into four by Dark Meta Knight.[15]
